Vpod Series 60 - Ecleto - 11-03-2022

Currently having issues with my detroit series 60 14l DDEC 4
Vpod stopped working couple months ago
Wont open to pass air to turbocharger
Dealership replaced vpod and harness and no change
I opened up the actuator almost all the way had to keep truck working
Knew turbo would give up sooner rather than later
That later was yesterday
Changed turbo already but need to fix vpod
I made a harness myself to eliminate the chance of a bad wire along the way
With key on and engine off the vpod blows air as if it was going to work
(Something it wouldn’t do before)
Bit when is on it doesn’t pass any air to turbo
Any suggestions guys…
Egr is eliminated
And I do get constant air from yellow air hose coming from tank
100-120psi

Thats because you are running a No EGR VGT no Vpods file
EGR works with VGT
To confirm this take a look in DDDL6 if you can actuate VNT
In your case the proper thing to do is to buy old school turbo
Flash back stock and do the EGR difrent way if you intend keeping VGT

I'm just wondering how did the dealer replace Vpod without testing it first and realizing that ECM has no control over it
I'm also wondering how you didn't see that Vpod stopped working same time u did the EGR or did you just plug it hopping 4 best
I'm also wondering how did you open the actuator, what you connected air to actuator and lowered the limiting bolt?

RE: Vpod Series 60 - Mechanic2030 - 11-03-2022

You have is s60 12.7 iv  1 vpod control the Egr and another vpod control the turbo . Do test with program first to see if the vpods respond

RE: Vpod Series 60 - Ecleto - 11-03-2022

Actually egr was eliminated over 5 years ago
Vpod kept working all those years.
The vpod issue was recent
One thing I did notice was that I fixed an issue with my throttle position pedal
A bad wire. I ran a straight wire to ecm and my issue was fixed
Thats around the time my vpod started acting up as well
Are they related along the way in the harness by any chance?

Listen
VNT and EGR are separate and can be enabled or disabled separately.

Had similar problem, original vpod quit working, installed new from dealer. worked about 100mi then same thing happened. installed new ecm from dealer, no change. Talked to my friend with a lot of experience, he said it is common problem with new vpods !!!!!   Dealer getting crap quality parts.  installed another new vpod and worked this time. Customer had to buy NEW ECM!!! with no reason!   Long story short freightliner and volvo dealers getting BAD quality parts.  Volvo has bad turbos two of my customers replaced new turbos after 500-700mi   one of them 6 turbos in 1 moth!!! another one 4    until you get a good one. Good luck.

It's has nothing to do with bad parts
The Vpod issue comes from abusing the truck, I had a customer who changed 7 vpods (no joke) after a long trip to USA the truck would return with bad Vpod no boost
I inspected the truck found air tanks full of water, drained them installed new vpod and instructed the owner to make sure drivers will drain it daily.
Never had any issues afterwards

Volvo sels only fully rebuild turbos, very expensive not crap
The week point of the turbo is the fins of the VNT
After 700k km your actuator will trigger a code because it can't no longer move the VNT nosle from worped fins.
Turbo out of calibration code will set
The same code will set if the power to turbo actuator is weak (wiring, corroded, bent pins and so on)
Cummins is using the same turbos and it has same response when power is weak.
I have also seen guys returning new turbos back to dealer having the same code

Anyway back to the subject

No dealer will replaced the Vpod and let it go calling it a day
The only way this can happen (and it did to me) is of the new harness came defective with interchanged Vpod controll wires B of the EGR / Turbo
The VNT and EGR work in together, if you look at the command output it is most of the time opposite that means if you step on it truck be gutless and eventually go in to boost mode shutting down the EGR
Only possibility to replicate what OP is describing is to use resistors to kill the EGR
The result will be No Codes Turbo Vpod will not move after you start the truck
End of story
